Summary
Proton's business email starts with Mail Essentials at $6.99 per user a month billed yearly: 15 GB, 3 custom domains and 10 addresses per user. Workspace Standard ($12.99) raises that to 1 TB, 15 domains and 20 addresses; Workspace Premium is $19.99. Every plan lists a catch-all address and SMTP access for external tools, and Proton Mail Bridge, which connects desktop mail apps, needs a paid plan. Proton's pitch is end-to-end encryption on its servers. MarkRelay's is different: the mail sits in your own Cloudflare account, for $99 a year plus Cloudflare, with no per-user fee.

“Alternatives to Proton for email”
r/privacy, 108 comments
Other hosted options include Tuta and Fastmail; Fastmail Standard is $5 per user a month for business. A different model is keeping the mail in infrastructure you control: MarkRelay stores it in your own Cloudflare D1 and R2.
“Best domain registrar for use with proton mail?”
r/ProtonMail, 68 comments
Any registrar where you can edit DNS records will do. What differs is how many domains each plan covers: Mail Essentials 3 domains, Workspace Standard 15.
“Proton Mail with custom domain: how to create a shared inbox with a Gmail user?”
r/ProtonMail, 10 comments
Proton's pricing page does not list a shared inbox. In MarkRelay a shared address is a mailbox you grant to any member you invite, whatever email they sign up with.
“Does mail+ allow for more than one domain ? And is there a way to have multiple mailboxes ?”
r/ProtonMail
On the business plans: Mail Essentials allows 3 domains and 10 addresses per user; each extra mailbox is another user. MarkRelay has no per-mailbox fee.

Yearly prices for the plan named. MarkRelay is the $99 Annual license plus $5 a month for Cloudflare Workers Paid, the same for any team size, with 3,000 sent emails a month included; receiving is free.
Two kinds of privacy
Proton says it uses end-to-end encryption so that no one, Proton included, can read your data on its servers. MarkRelay answers a different question: who holds the data. It runs in your own Cloudflare account and stores each message in your D1 database and R2 bucket, so the mail stays in an account you control, with Cloudflare as the infrastructure provider.
That makes MarkRelay a fit for teams that want their mail, keys and access rules under their own account, with per-mailbox access for members and scoped API keys for apps, rather than for people who need end-to-end encryption with outside contacts.
Where MarkRelay fits
A good fit when
- Teams that want the mailboxes, data and access rules in their own Cloudflare account.
- Many domains and mailboxes without a per-user fee.
Look elsewhere when
- End-to-end encrypted mail: Proton does that; MarkRelay does not.
- Desktop mail apps over IMAP.
